Overview
Avipattikar Tablet
Avipattikar Churna is a premier Mridu Virechana (mild laxative) and Pittashamaka formulation specifically designed to address the vitiation of Pachaka Pitta and Samana Vayu. It acts primarily by neutralizing hyperacidity, enhancing intestinal motility, and clearing accumulated Amadosha from the Annavaha Srotas. Its unique composition balances the Ushna-Tikshna properties of its digestive stimulants with the cooling, purgative effect of Trivrit, making it safe for chronic use. It is the gold standard for managing Amlapitta and Vibandha (constipation) associated with heat.
Common Name
Avipattikar Churna, Avipathikari Choornam, Avipathi Churnam, Avipattikara Powder.

Dravya Guna Analysis (Pharmacological Profile)
- Rasa: Katu (Pungent), Tikta (Bitter), Madhura (Sweet).
- Guna: Laghu (Light), Ruksha (Dry), Saram (Mobility inducing).
- Virya: Sheeta (Overall effect is cooling despite Katu ingredients due to Trivrit/Sharkara).
- Vipaka: Madhura.
- Karma: Anulomana (Directional correction of Vata), Pitta-Rechaka (Purgation of Pitta), Deepana-Pachana (Digestive stimulant), Krimighna (Anthelmintic).
- Dosha Effect: Specifically Pitta-Vata Shamaka; cleanses Kledaka Kapha.
- Dhatu Impact: Rasa and Rakta (Purification).
- Srotasa Involvement: Annavaha (Digestive), Purishavaha (Excretory), Rasavaha.
Samprapti Vighatana (Pathogenesis Breakage)
- Nidana: Excessive consumption of Vidahi (burning), Ushna (hot), and Tikshna (sharp) foods.
- Dosha/Agni: Leads to Mandagni and Vidagdha Ajirna, causing Pitta to become Vidagdha (sour/acidic).
- Srotorodha: Excessive Kleda (moisture) and Pitta block the Annavaha Srotas, causing Urdhvagata (upward) movement of acid.
How Avipattikar Breaks the Cycle :
- Deepana-Pachana: Trikatu and Musta correct the Agnimandya.
- Amalaki & Sharkara: Neutralize the Vidagdha Pitta (acidity).
- Trivrit (Rechana): Forces the downward movement (Adhogamana) of vitiated Pitta through the bowel, physically removing the morbid Doshas from the Amashaya (stomach).
- Anulomana: Clears Srotorodha, allowing Samana Vayu to function normally.
Indication-wise Mechanism of Action (MOA)
Amlapitta (Hyperacidity/GERD)
Pathology: High Drava (liquid) and Amala (sour) guna of Pitta leading to burning and reflux.
MOA: The high concentration of Lavanga and Sharkara acts as a buffer. Trivrit provides Mridu Virechana, which is the specific treatment for Pitta (Pittasya Recheranam). By flushing the excess Pitta out of the system, it prevents the recurrence of acid reflux.
Vibandha (Constipation)
Pathology: Apana Vayu Vaigunya and dryness in the Pakvashaya.
MOA: Trivrit is a Sukha-virechaka (easy purgative). Combined with Triphala, it softens the stool and stimulates the Saram guna, ensuring smooth evacuation without causing intestinal cramps (due to the carminative action of Ela and Patra).
Agnimandya (Loss of Appetite)
Pathology: Ama coating the digestive fire.
MOA: Trikatu and Vida Lavana act as Ruchivardhaka (appetite enhancers). They digest the Ama and clear the tongue and stomach lining, restoring the perception of hunger.
Pharmacodynamic Synergy
The formulation is a masterpiece of Ayurvedic chemistry.
- While Trikatu is Ushna (hot), it is used here to digest the Ama that causes indigestion.
- To prevent these hot herbs from aggravating Pitta further, they are balanced by a massive dose of Trivrit and Sharkara, which ensure that the heat and acidity are immediately purged out of the body.
- Lavanga acts as a localized anesthetic for the gastric mucosa, reducing irritation.
Clinical Utility for Doctors
- Ideal Patient: Pitta-Prakriti or Vata-Pitta individuals suffering from "burning" sensations.
- Stage: Excellent in Sama-Pitta conditions where toxins are mixed with bile.
- Anupana: Best taken with Sheetala Jala (cool water) or Coconut water for hyperacidity; Warm water for constipation.
- Timing: For Virechana (purgation), give at bedtime. For Amlapitta, give just before or after meals.
- Rogi Bala: Use lower doses in children/elderly due to the high Trivrit content.
Safety & Rational Prescribing
- Contraindications: Acute diarrhea, Ulcerative Colitis (active flare), and severe dehydration.
- Pregnancy: Not recommended due to the Rechana (purgative) property of Trivrit, which may stimulate uterine contractions.
- Pitta Risk: Despite being for Pitta, the Trikatu content can occasionally cause transient "throat burn" if not taken with enough water.
- Dose: 3–6 grams; titration is necessary based on the patient's Koshta (bowel habit).
Recommended Combinations
- Chronic Gastritis: Pair with Kamadudha Ras or Sutashekhar Ras.
- Liver Disorders: Pair with Punarnavadi Kashayam.
- Panchakarma: Used as a Nitya Virechana drug during Purvakarma.
- Pathya: Focus on Draksha, Dadima, and Mudra Yusha (moong soup).
