Overview

Dashang Lepa

Dashanga Lepa is a polyherbal powder used for external application to counteract Shotha (inflammation), Visha (toxins), and Daha (burning sensation). It is specifically formulated to penetrate the skin layers (Twak) and neutralize localized Pitta and Rakta disturbances. When mixed with a small portion of Ghee (one-fifth part) and water, it forms a cooling, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory paste that "pulls out" heat and infection from the tissues.

Common Name

Dashang Lep, Dashanga Churna (for Lepa), Dashanga External Ointment.

Dravya Guna Analysis (Pharmacological Profile)

  • Rasa: Tikta (Bitter), Kashaya (Astringent).
  • Guna: Laghu (Light), Ruksha (Dry), Sookshma (Penetrating).
  • Virya: Sheeta (Cooling).
  • Vipaka: Katu (Pungent).
  • Karma: Vishaghna (Anti-toxic), Shothahara (Anti-inflammatory), Varnya (Improves complexion), Kandughna (Anti-pruritic).
  • Dosha Effect: Primarily Pitta-Rakta Shamaka; effectively reduces Kapha dampness in wounds.
  • Srotasa Involvement: Twak (Skin) and Raktavaha Srotas.

Samprapti Vighatana (Pathogenesis Breakage)

The formulation breaks the pathogenesis of localized skin inflammation (Shotha) and toxicity (Visha):

How Dasang Break The Cycle :

  • Visha-Nirharana: Shirisha, the "best anti-toxic herb," neutralizes the chemical or biological toxins present at the site of the lesion.
  • Pitta-Shamana: Rakta Chandana and Madhuyashti provide immediate cooling (Sheeta Virya), reducing the Vidaha (burning) and redness (Raga).
  • Lekhana & Shodhana: The Tikta rasa (Bitter) herbs like Daruharidra act as natural antibiotics, "cleaning" the Dushta Vrana (infected ulcers) and removing slough.
  • Vatanulomana: Jatamansi and Tagara help reduce the localized pain (Shoola) associated with inflammation by calming the local nerve endings.

Indication-wise Mechanism of Action (MOA)

Visarpa (Erysipelas / Herpes / Spreading Skin Lesions)

Pathology: Rapidly spreading Pitta and Rakta vitiation in the skin.

MOA: The Sheeta and Stambhana (astringent) action of the Lepa halts the spread of the infection. The Vishaghna property of Shirisha treats the underlying "poisonous" nature of the spread.

Visha-Visphota (Toxic Eruptions / Blisters)

Pathology: Fluid-filled blisters caused by insect bites, allergens, or chemical irritants.

MOA: Kushta and Balaka help in absorbing excess Kleda (fluid), while the two types of Nisha (Turmerics) provide potent anti-allergic and antimicrobial cover.

Dushta Vrana (Infected/Non-healing Wounds)

Pathology: Chronic wounds with pus, foul smell, and inflammation.

MOA: The Kashaya rasa helps in wound contraction (Vrana Ropana), and the Panchama-amsha Ghrita (1/5th part Ghee) ensures the medicine doesn't cause excessive dryness, allowing for healthy granulation tissue.

Pharmacodynamic Synergy (Formulation Intelligence)

  • The Anti-Toxic Core: Shirisha is the lead herb, scientifically recognized for its mast-cell stabilizing and anti-venom properties.
  • The "Two Nishas": Haridra and Daruharidra provide a synergistic antibacterial effect that is stronger than either herb used alone.
  • Aromatic Pacification: Jatamansi, Ela, and Balaka provide a pleasant aroma and cooling effect, which helps psychologically soothe patients in high-pain/burning conditions.
  • The Ghee Factor: Adding Ghee (Ghrita) serves as a lipophilic carrier, allowing the herbal alkaloids to penetrate deeper into the Twak (skin layers) than a simple water-based paste could.

Clinical Utility for Doctors

  • Preparation: Mix 10g of powder with 2g of Ghee and sufficient water to make a thick paste.
  • Thickness: Apply a layer about the thickness of a buffalo's skin (approx. 0.5 cm) for maximum effect.
  • Usage Tip: The Lepa should be removed as soon as it dries (Sushka). Applying a dried lepa can cause skin irritation or trap heat.
  • Ama Stage: Excellent for the Amavastha of Shotha (initial inflammatory stage) to prevent suppuration (Paka).

Safety & Rational Prescribing

  • Contraindications: Do not apply on extremely dry, cracked skin without sufficient Ghee.
  • Caution: Ensure the powder is finely sieved (Vastra-puta) to avoid mechanical irritation on sensitive wounds.
  • Application Time: Ideally applied during the day. Avoid keeping it on overnight as it may block skin pores once it dries completely.
