Overview
Erandabhrust Haritaki/Himeja Tablets/ Vati
Eranda Bhrusta Himej is a synergistic duo of Bal-Haritaki and Castor Oil. It is a specialized Anulomana (downward-regulating) formulation where the Ushna (hot) and Snehana (unctuous) properties of Eranda Taila are used to mitigate the Rukshata (dryness) of Haritaki. This results in a "smooth-flow" laxative that avoids the intestinal cramping typically associated with dry powder laxatives.
Common Name

Dravya Guna Analysis (Pharmacological Profile)
- Rasa: Kashaya (Astringent) predominant, with Tikta, Katu, Madhura.
- Guna: Laghu (Light), Sukshma (Minute/Penetrating), Snigdha (Unctuous).
- Virya: Ushna (Hot).
- Vipaka: Madhura (Sweet).
- Karma: Vata-Anulomana (Directing Vata downwards), Sara (Inducing movement), Pachana (Digestive).
- Dosha Effect: Primarily Vata-Hara and Kapha-Hara.
- Srotasa: Purishavaha (Excretory) and Raktavaha (Circulatory).
- Combined Guna Profile: Without the salt, the formula is purely focused on Srotoshodhana (clearing channels). The Sukshma (penetrating) quality of Eranda allows the Chedana (scraping) quality of Haritaki to reach the deeper folds of the colon without causing irritation.
Samprapti Vighatana (Pathogenesis Breakage)
The formulation breaks the cycle of Vibandha (Constipation) by addressing the "Dryness" and "Coldness" of Vata.
- Nidana: High Vata diet or lifestyle leading to Rukshata in the Pakvashaya (Large Intestine).
- Dosha: Apana Vayu becomes stagnant (Sanga).
- Dushya: Purisha (Stool) becomes dehydrated and sticky (Saama).
- Srotorodha: Accumulation of waste in the intestinal villi.
How Eranda Bhrusta Himeja Breaks The Cycle:
- Snehana : Eranda oil coats the intestinal wall, reducing friction.
- Sarakta: It draws moisture into the stool.
- Anulomana: Haritaki provides the mechanical "push" by stimulating the nerves of the Manovaha and Annavaha Srotas located in the gut.
Indication-wise Mechanism of Action (MOA)
Chronic Constipation (Vibandha)
Pathology: Hardened stool due to Apana Vayu dysfunction.
MOA: The Sara Guna (mobility) of Eranda overcomes the Stambha (rigidity) of the stool.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (Amavata)
Pathology: Ama (toxins) generated in the gut traveling to the joints.
MOA: Even without salt, Haritaki acts as a Pathya (channel-cleansing) herb. By ensuring daily Mala-shodhana, it reduces the systemic "load" of toxins.
Flatulence & Bloating (Adhmana)
Pathology: Gas trapped due to upward-moving Vata (Udhvaga Vata).
MOA: It forces the Vata to move in its natural downward direction, relieving abdominal pressure.
Pharmacodynamic Synergy (Formulation Intelligence)
- The "Sanskar" (Processing): Haritaki is Ruksha (dry). Eranda is Snigdha (oily). Frying the Haritaki in the oil ensures that the Snigdha property is absorbed into the fiber of the fruit, making it a "Snehana-Rechaka" (Oily Purgative).
- Vipaka Synergy: Both have a Madhura Vipaka (post-digestive sweet effect), which is highly nourishing and soothing to the nervous system (Vata-shamana) long-term.
Clinical Utility for Doctors
- Ideal Patient: Patients with "Dry Constipation," those who pass pellet-like stools, and the elderly.
- Stage of Disease: Chronic management of Vata disorders.
- Ama vs Nirama: More effective in Nirama (non-toxic) or Alpa-Ama (low toxin) states.
- Anupana: Warm Water is mandatory to activate the Ushna Virya of the Eranda.
- Dose: 1–2 tablets at bedtime.
Safety & Rational Prescribing
- Contraindications: Pregnancy (Castor oil is a known uterine stimulant), Acute appendicitis, or Diarrhea.
- Caution: Avoid if there is active inflammation in the gut (like Crohn's or Colitis) due to the Ushna nature.
- Dose Titration: If stools become too watery, reduce to 1 tablet or use every alternate day.
