Dravya Guna Analysis (Pharmacological Profile)

Unified Rasapanchaka of the Formulation: The combined profile of Puga Khanda is a unique blend of Astringent-Sweet therapeutics.

  • Rasa: Kashaya-Madhura (predominantly astringent and sweet). The Kashaya rasa of Puga is balanced by the extreme Madhura of milk and sugar.
  • Guna: Guru, Snigdha (Heavy and unctuous).
  • Virya: Shita (Cold). The formulation is designed to be highly cooling to the Abhyantara Agni and Rakta.
  • Vipaka: Madhura (Sweet).
  • Karma: Vajikarana (Aphrodisiac), Pittahara (Anti-acidic), Shulaghna (Analgesic), Balya-Pushtida (Nourishing).
  • Target Srotas: Annavaha (Digestive), Artavavaha/Shukravaha (Reproductive), and Mutravaha (Urinary).

Samprapti Vighatana (Pathogenesis Breakage)

Puga Khanda acts primarily by breaking the Pitta-Vata cycle of inflammation and depletion:

How Supari Paka Breaks The Cycle:

  • Amlapitta/Daha: Excess Vidagdha Pitta (sour/burnt acidity) is neutralized by the Madhura-Shita properties of Milk, Ghrita, and Shatavari.
  • Srotorodha (Shula/Amavata): The presence of Trikatu and Jiraka ensures that while the formulation is heavy (Guru), it does not create Ama. It clears the channels to relieve Shula (pain).
  • Dhatu Kshaya: In conditions of infertility or weakness, the Jivaniya (life-giving) herbs like Vidari and Shatavari directly replenish the Shukra Dhatu.
  • Adho-marga Ashuddhi: The astringent (Kashaya) nature of Puga provides a "stambhana" effect, useful in Gudaja Rudhira (bleeding piles) and Pradara (excessive discharge).

Indication-wise Mechanism of Action (MOA)

Amlapitta & Chardi (Hyperacidity & Vomiting)

Pathology: High Dravata (liquidity) and Ushna (heat) of Pitta in the stomach.

MOA: The Kashaya rasa of Puga dries the excess secretion (Kleda), while Sita and Payas (milk) act as a buffer to the gastric acid.

Vajikarana & Vandhyatva (Aphrodisiac & Infertility)

Pathology: Shukra-Alpata (low sperm/ovum quality) or Garbhashaya Daurbalya (uterine weakness).

MOA: The formulation acts as a Vrishya Rasayana. Herbs like Gokshura and Shatamuli enhance the Saumya (cool/nurturing) nature of reproductive fluids, supporting conception.

Mutrakrichra & Ashmari (Dysuria & Calculi)

Pathology: Ushna-Vata causing burning and crystal formation in the bladder.

MOA: Gokshura and Kamala Bija are Mutrala (diuretic) and Shitala, flushing the urinary tract and soothing the mucosa.

Clinical Utility for Doctors

  • Ideal Patient: Patients with Pitta-dominant Prakriti, those suffering from burnout, or women with chronic leucorrhea (Shveta Pradara).
  • Stage of Disease: Excellent for Chronic (Purana) stages of acidity and debility.
  • Dose: The Shloka mentions "Kola-matra" (approx. 6–12g) taken early in the morning (Pratarutthaya).
  • Anupana: Lukewarm milk or water.
  • Clinical Pearl: Use this as a nutritive analgesic for patients who have abdominal pain associated with gastric ulcers or gastritis.

Safety & Rational Prescribing

  • Contraindications: Not recommended in Atyagni (excessive digestive fire with no secretions) or Mandagni (extremely poor digestion) without accompanying Deepana drugs.
  • Caution: Due to its Guru nature, it may cause constipation if the patient has a very Ruksha (dry) bowel.
  • Diabetes: High sugar content makes it contraindicated for diabetic patients.
