Overview

Swash Kasa Chintamani Rasa -

Shvasa Kasa Chintamani Rasa is a premium herbo-mineral formulation (Sagandha Nirgandha Rasayana) detailed in the Hikka-Shvasa Rogadhikara of Bhaishajya Ratnavali. It is characterized by its intensive Bhavana process with Kantakari and Aja Dugdha, which imparts specific Srotoshodhana (channel clearing) and Balya (strengthening) properties. This formulation is primarily used for deep-seated Pranavaha Srotas pathologies where Vata-Kapha dominance leads to severe respiratory obstruction. It functions as both a Roga-Prashamana (curative) and a Kshaya-Hara (anti-degenerative) agent for the lungs.

Common Name

Shwaskas Chintamani Ras, Svasa Kasa Chintamani Rasa, Shwas Kas Chintamani Ras, Swas Khas Chintamani, Shwasakashachintamani Ras.

Dravya Guna Analysis (Pharmacological Profile)

  • Rasa: Tikta, Katu, Kashaya (primarily from Bhavana dravyas).
  • Guna: Laghu, Ruksha, Tikshna (due to Lauha/Abhrak) balanced by Snigdha (Swarna/Mukta).
  • Virya: Ushna (Potent thermogenic action to liquefy Kapha).
  • Vipaka: Katu.
  • Karma: Chedana (Expectorant), Lekhana (Scraping), Hridya (Cardioprotective), Rasayana (Rejuvenative), Vatanulomana (Directing Vata downwards).
  • Dosha Effect: Specifically Kapha-Vata Shamaka; balances Udana and Prana Vayu.
  • Dhatu Impact: Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, and Majja (via Abhrak).
  • Srotasa Involvement: Pranavaha, Annavaha, and Rasavaha Srotas.
  • Combined Guna Profile: The formulation possesses a unique "Suryatapi" like intensity combined with "Somya" (cooling/nourishing) elements. While the Lauha and Gandhaka provide the Tikshna quality to break Srotorodha, the Swarna, Mukta, and Aja Dugdha prevent tissue emaciation (Dhatu Kshaya), making it safe for chronic debilitated patients.

Samprapti Vighatana (Pathogenesis Breakage)

In Shvasa and Kasa, the Samprapti originates in the Amashaya (stomach) but manifests in the Pranavaha Srotas (respiratory tract).

  • Nidana: Intake of Kapha-Vardhaka Ahara, exposure to dust/cold.
  • Agni State: Mandagni leading to Ama formation.
  • Srotorodha: The Vayu is obstructed by Kapha in the respiratory channels, causing Vimarga Gamana (reverse movement of Vata).
  • Stepwise Breakage by Shvasa Kasa Chintamani:
  • Deepana-Pachana: The Parada-Gandhaka (Kajjali) base improves Jatharagni and digests Ama.
  • Chedana & Srotoshodhana: Kantakari and Lauha scrape the adherent Kapha from the Srotas.
  • Vatanulomana: Once the obstruction is cleared, the Ushna Virya ensures Vata moves in its natural downward direction.
  • Brimhana: Swarna and Aja Dugdha nourish the lung parenchyma, preventing the recurrence of Vata provocation due to Kshaya.

Indication-wise Mechanism of Action (MOA)

Shvasa (Asthma/Dyspnea)

Pathology: Prana Vayu is obstructed by Stambha (stiffness) and Kapha.

MOA: Abhrak Bhasma acts as a Pranavaha Srotas Rasayana, enhancing lung vital capacity. Kantakari acts as a potent bronchodilator by neutralizing the Sheeta guna of Kapha.

Stage: Most effective in Tamaka Shvasa (Bronchial Asthma) and Vega-Avastha (Acute episodes).

Kasa (Chronic Cough/Bronchitis)

Pathology: Irritation in the respiratory mucosa with or without expectoration.

MOA: Yashtimadhu and Nagavalli provide a soothing effect (Kanthya) while Mukta acts as a natural calcium source to reduce inflammatory cytokines. Swarna Makshika improves Rakta quality, enhancing oxygen carrying capacity.

Stage: Indicated in Kshataja and Kshayaja Kasa where lung tissue repair is required.

Pharmacodynamic Synergy (Yogavahi & Formulation Intelligence)

  • The Kajjali Effect: Parada and Gandhaka act as a vehicle (Yogavahi), carrying the properties of Swarna and Abhrak deep into the Sukshma Srotas (micro-channels).
  • Tissue Regeneration: The combination of Swarna (Gold) and Aja Dugdha (Goat's milk) is the classical "gold standard" for Kshaya (wasting). Aja Dugdha is Samanaguna to human tissues and specifically Phupphusa-balya (lung strengthening).
  • Synergy of Bhavana: 28 total Bhavanas (7 each of 4 liquids) reduce the particle size to a nano-scale, ensuring rapid absorption through the sublingual/gastric mucosa.

Clinical Utility for Doctors

  • Ideal Patient: Patients with chronic respiratory distress, low immunity, and signs of Dhatu Kshaya (weight loss, weakness).
  • Ama vs Nirama: Can be used in both. In Sa-Ama state, use with Ardraka Swarasa. In Nirama state, use with Honey.
  • Anupana: Specifically Pippali Churna and Honey (as per Shloka) to enhance Chedana action.
  • Dose: 125 mg to 250 mg (1-2 Gunja).
  • Rogi Bala: High potency; suitable for patients with moderate to high Bala. For children, use with caution and reduced dosage.

Safety & Rational Prescribing

  • Contraindications: Severe gastric ulcers (Ushna Virya may aggravate). Not recommended in high Pitta conditions with active hemoptysis unless strictly supervised.
  • Caution: Monitor patients with renal impairment due to the heavy mineral content (Lauha/Parada).
  • Pitta Aggravation: If the patient complains of burning sensation, switch Anupana to Sharkala Jala or Ghee.
  • Self-Dispensing: Strictly prohibited. Requires Vaidya supervision due to the presence of Rasasindura and Bhasmas.

Recommended Combinations

  • For Acute Wheezing: Combine with Kanakasava and Shringyadi Churna.
  • For Chronic Fatigue/Debility: Combine with Chyawanprash or Agastya Hareetaki.
  • Panchakarma Pairing: Excellent post-Vamana or Mridu Virechana to maintain channel patency.
  • Pathya: Goat milk, old rice (Purana Shali), lukewarm water, garlic, and dry ginger.
